An apostille is an official certificate that authenticates a US-issued document for use in another country. Under the Hague Apostille Convention, an apostille confirms that a document's signature, seal, or stamp is genuine — so it will be recognized by authorities abroad.
In the United States, each state and territory issues its own apostilles through its Secretary of State (or equivalent office). This means the apostille must come from the state where the document was originally issued — for example, a New York birth certificate requires a New York State apostille, even if you now live in another state.
